Manoomin as Medicine Initiative Receives Grant Funding

A $13,800 grant from the Superior Health Foundation will help support Northern Michigan University's Manoomin as Medicine Initiative.

Led by NMU's Office of Opportunity, Empowerment and People, the initiative will focus on community outreach, local revitalization of wild rice or “manoomin” beds, monitoring watersheds and working on youth-centered projects in conjunction with a number of partners.

"Food is medicine, and for Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodéwadmi communities, Manoomin carries generations of knowledge about health and healing,” said Megan Murphy, Superior Health Foundation CEO. “Superior Health Foundation supports NMU and its tribal partners in restoring access to this vital food source and creating meaningful opportunities for Native youth to lead that work forward."
